It was hardly the first time I\u2019d seen you
\nbut somehow it was like looking into the sun
\na blinding flash,\u00a0a hint of something new
\nsomething beautiful and full of promise
\nI\u2019d never been so off my guard
\nwrapped\u00a0up in the moment
\nlost in your twinkling eyes
\nif I stop to think about it I can still taste your lips
\nstill feel our tongues dancing
\nstill hear my nervous laughter
\ntoo busy trying to regain my mental balance to just shut up and enjoy the moment
\nif I\u2019d just been a little weaker or a little dumber\u00a0who knows where we\u2019d be now
\nbut no, I wanted something different
\nsomething more and less at the same time
\nand somewhere in the middle of this tidal wave
\nI found my footing, held my ground
\nit took so much not to be swept away
\nnot to get caught in your undertow
\nbut no, I had to be reasonable, had to be rational
\neven as the emotions of the moment made me say things I knew better than to reveal
\nout of something so full of possibility
\nI found the way to the worst of both worlds
\nI haven\u2019t seen you since
\nhave barely spoken, despite our insistence on staying in touch
\nit was just a moment, and moments pass
\nthe right thing done in the wrong way
\nall I can do is look back on the night and wonder
\nI so often think that things might be different\u00a0if I\u2019d only said the right thing
\nthat it\u2019s almost funny and rather sad to know
\nthat everything might\u2019ve been better here
\nif I\u2019d only kept my mouth shut<\/p>\n
The inspiration for this one\u2019s subject matter is semi-obvious, going back to the subject of pretty much every other poem I\u2019ve written in here over the past couple months now. The style, though, is a little different than usual thanks to a recent obsession with slam poetry. I went out of my way to sound this one out in my head as I wrote it, and as a result I know EXACTLY how I\u2019d read it if it were to be performed.
