when it breaks

not quite sure how to move
as the cracks keep on growing
throughout the foundation below
waiting, full of dread
and the opposite of anticipation
for the final moments
when the earth will collapse
under the weight of everything
and it all will crumble
as it must surely do
something so strong, so sure
to witness its untimely end
shakes the very bedrock
upon which my life has been built
bracing for the impact
with whatever lies below
no way to arrest the fall
a car crash in slow motion
I close my eyes so tight
and ready for what’s coming
nothing left to do
but hold my breath
and take what’s coming
when it breaks
